SXSW ‘10 or: How I Learned To Stop Thinking And Love The Internet
Here is a collection of scattered musings during my 10-day voyage into the city of Austin (in somewhat chronological order):
- Tacos at the Austin airport are gross.
- Bus ride from airport to downtown area is only $1.00. This is great.
- I really hate the whole badge process. Like you figure it’s for a tech/web nerd conference they can come up with a better way than yelling your name out-loud for you to pick up your badge, but apparently not.
- Definitely way more people with iPhones than last year. I can imagine last week was AT&T and Apple’s favorite time of the year besides Christmas.
- Everything social media related like quadrupled big time from last year. Sigh.
- Is it me or did Gowalla pretty much just rip off of Foursquare but with just better design? Not a dis. I’m a sucker for web 2.0 gloss myself, actually.
- Meeting Mark Cuban IRL was pretty cool. My sister is a huge Mavs fan, but I more or less think he’s a dick. I mean anyone that’s into pro wrestling has to be, right?
- I walked by Steve Aoki in some random street. He’s kind of a dick as well.
- I also walked by Killer Mike. He on the other hand, was not.
- Met some high school hipster kids at a house party. I honestly haven’t been to a huge house party since New Years Eve about 5 yrs ago, let alone one that actually had an outdoor stage complete with middle-aged lady selling merch and homemade jewelry in the backyard. Luckily the person I went with was the same age or I would’ve felt realllly out of place (thanks, Christina). Generation gap, I guess. This was not the Austin I remember from the movie Slacker.
- East Austin however, is just like it. The real Austin doesn’t start until you go under the highway past the crackhead bums.
- The Scott Inn is probably my favorite venue. Skate/BMX park in the day…karaoke bar and hip-hop/funk venue at night? Pssh. They need to bring that to Tampa.
- Went to the Tumblr party thing and it was pretty weird. Granted I love the free beer and Emo’s is a great venue, but seeing (a lot of) people with nametags of their blognames is totally surreal.
- Also got drunk thanks to AOL’s endless supply of chocolate beer and Blue Moon. Was also surprised PayPal was giving out free beer too.
- Saw some idiot getting some hosting company’s logo tattooed on his arm.
- Got to hang out with Patrick and Jon from One Trick Pony. Really cool dudes and awesome designer/developers.
- Chicken and waffle tacos are AMAZING.
- I’ve come to the conclusion that I am totally dependent on my iPhone. God knows where I would be without Google Maps. LITERALLY.
- Although I missed Flatstock (I know, right?!?!) I did get to see a free Hatch Show Print poster exhibit at the Austin Museum of Art. Pretty much the best posters, ever.
- Walked around the park and randomly played some soccer. Laying in the grass and staring at clouds is actually just as great as I remembered it.
Favorite Shows:
- The Octopus Project’s Hexadecagon 8-channel audio and 8-screen video feast for the senses. Incredible. Yvonne Lambert shreds the theremin. Well worth the stupid wait at Whole Foods.
- Adrian Younge & The Black Dynamite Sound Orchestra performing songs from Black Dynamite. We saw this by accident but stuck around since it’s hosted by Waxpoetics and plus we saw Dam-Funk there in attendance.
- Stones Throw All 45’s DJ set. Dam-Funk’s hand gestures when he spins is the best. Missed Madlib though :(
- Finally got to see local band Nervous Turkey play some mean ass blues. Good guys and good music.
- Helped friends Florida Night Heat find a random spot in Austin to play in. Filmed them doing a guerrilla performance on a street corner with their equipment plugged into their van. Tampa keeps it gully. Footage coming soon.
- Saw this great all-girl Japanese post-punk band named Hystoic Vein. Awesome stage presence. Karen O best watch her back.
- Speaking of Japanese frontwomen, Little Dragon was a great show (despite the shitty weather).
Show I Missed:
- Carniville. Which I heard was hard to get into anyways.
- Holy Fuck + GZA + the xx. Line was way way too long.
- I really wanted to see Best Coast and the whole Gorillavsbear Mexican Summer show but alas. We will meet again lo-fi California noisepop.
- American: The Bill Hicks Story
- Trash Humpers by Harmony Korine
- Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radient Child
- Enter The Void by Gaspar Noé
- FLATSTOCK!!! I HAVE LOST MY DESIGN CRED FOR MISSING THIS! WAH
All in all it was a pretty great trip and I definitely had some memorable times. Especially hanging out with Florida Night Heat, Mike, and riding back to Florida from Texas. Also Russell and his roommates for letting me stay at their house. If you’re reading this, I left my shoes at your place.
Maybe I’ll see you next year Austin. Hopefully with a film badge this time.
